Greetings families! I wanted to update you on a few important things happening at Mount Miguel High School. Please note the calendar items and I look forward to seeing you on 3/13.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
Mount Miguel High School is recruiting for Parent Mentors for the 2016-2017 school year. Mentors must be parents of current students at our school. Mentors will help other parents in our school community with various tasks, events and activities here on our campus including teaching other parents how to use Infinite Campus and about school policies and ways to get assistance for their student(s). Mentors must have good oral communication skills in English and Spanish, Arabic, or Tagalog and be available to work 10-20 hours per week. Hours are flexible during the school day and parent mentors will need to attend a few night meetings a month. Parent Mentors will be paid minimum wage; $10.50 an hour.

Qualifications: Preferred candidates will be bilingual in one or more of the following languages: Spanish, Arabic, Tagalog and/or represent a specific demographic of our student population.  The ideal parent mentor is friendly and outgoing and helpful with other parents as well as able to be confidential.

If you are interested, please write a short letter, with your student’s name and some information about yourself, requesting an interview and email it to drosas@guhsd.net or leave it in the main office with the Receptionist or Principal’s Secretary between 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

The deadline is Friday, March 10th.

FREE PSAT testing for all 9th graders on March 13th. Please look for a schedule and more information being sent via email between today and early next week.

SATURDAY SCHOLARS:
Saturday Scholars are on the following dates: 
3/4, 3/11, 3/18, 3/25
4/9, 4/29 
5/6 5/13, 5/20 

While some students are assigned to Saturday Scholars for behavior and attendance reasons, ALL students are invited to attend. Tutoring is available in math, English, and Learning Lab and in science, social science and PE on a rotational basis.

SENIORS (Class of 2017):

Yearbooks: soft cover $55 and hardcover $65 
Senior items: 
1) Senior ads are $40 for DIY and $50 for yearbook staff doing it. 
2) Senior baby pictures $5
 Email aduran@guhsd.net for more information. The last date to purchase your senior items is March 24th

The last day to order yearbooks so that they are shipped to the school is May 11th, 2017. Purchases can me made in the finance office or through our MMHS website! Any books ordered after May 11th will be shipped directly to homes at a later date. 

Counseling:   
Tuesday March 21st starts our Check Your Mood Week with Signs of Suicide Presentations in social science classrooms for 9th and 11th graders. This is an evidenced based depression awareness and suicide prevention program. Presentations will be facilitated by San Diego Youth Services (SDYS).

FINANCIAL AID (FAFSA & CA DREAM ACT) Deadline to qualify for a CAL Grant (FREE CASH FOR COLLEGE) is March 2nd.  Please encourage your seniors to submit their application.  They can get assistance on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Lab 234 with Ms. Garcia at College Bound.

COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE LETTERS: Please encourage seniors to submit any letters of acceptance from college admissions office to the Counseling Center.  Dr. Hedrick will be sharing this information on College Thursdays after the The Pledge of Allegiance.  We want to share with our Matador community all of the seniors who are getting into college and/or receiving scholarships.  Thank you.

Athletics:

Our wrestling team won the league title this season! Also, congratulations to our Wrestling Matador Kerri Gordon! She qualified for the California Girls State meet this weekend in Visalia!

Girls and Boys basketball teams have qualified for playoffs.
Girls are at home tonight (2/24) against Torrey Pines, 7pm
Boys are @ Coronado Saturday (2/25) night, 7pm

Our District Goals and Objectives provide an action plan designed to focus our efforts on educational success for every student.  As a critical member of our educational community, you are invited to participate in a workshop to review and update this fundamental set of beliefs which will inform our district policies and practice. The review and update process is critical to ensure our goals are timely, meaningful, and responsive to the needs of our community.

Our Fall play was outstanding. Thank you to the cast and the fans of Almost Maine for a great show. Thank you for supporting performing arts at Mount Miguel.

Our Marching Matadors have participated in two parades in the last couple of weeks. The Mother Goose parade and the La Jolla Christmas Parade. To all the fans on the streets waiving and cheering them on, thank you. Make sure you stop by the concerts happening next week (see schedule below).

Also, congratulations to Girls JV Soccer who won 5-0!!!


Please know that December Saturday Scholars is open to all students grades 9-12. This is an opportunity for students to prepare for finals, get extra tutoring, and make-up missing assignments. Please contact your students teacher for specific information for each class. Students have seen a copy of this schedule posted in their teacher's classrooms.

Counseling:            

FINANCIAL AID IS OPEN:  Students can apply for financial aid for Fall 2017 starting October 1, 2016 and won’t have to wait until January 1, 2017.  This timing will allow students and their families to complete their financial aid application while, or even before, they apply for college admission, The application will now ask for income data from a year for which the income tax filing deadline has already passed.  Students and families can use 2015 income tax information needed on the 2017-18 FAFSA.  The March 2nd Priority Deadline still applies for the FAFSA and CA Dream Act.  
-Securing a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID www.fafsa.ed.go or CA Dream Act ID, if applicable
           -Opening an account to track state and financial aid awards is required after a FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application

COLLEGE BOUND:  Assistance for students who need help on their financial aid applications, scholarships, common application, and community college applications is available on Tuesday and Wednesday 3pm-4:30pm in Lab 234 with Ms. Garcia.  College Outreach reps are here to help as well.  Please refer students with questions or who need assistance to Ms. Garcia.


Senior Picture Makeup: December 5th was the last scheduled senior picture makeup day. If seniors need to make up            
          their Pictures they need to call 858-935-6969 to schedule their appointment time.

Principal's Update: 11/4/2016... Happy November

Happy November!

Please note that the Fall Honors & Awards Ceremony is scheduled for November 15, 2016. The event will be held in the Matador gymnasium at 6:00 PM. Honorees will receive notification by Monday, November 7th.

Tardy Sweeps:

Matador families we will be having tardy sweeps the next couple of weeks. Please have your students to school before 7:00 if they have a first period start time and by 7:55 if they have a second period start time. Being on time helps promote a healthy educational environment for all students and staff. We have been running at 10% of the student body being late in the morning. We are running at 2% during the day. Being on time is a good trait to develop for future job and college experiences.

COLLEGE BOUND -Please encourage our students to attend this FREE program to help students with their post-secondary plans.  Ms. Garcia and College Outreach Counselors will be assisting seniors with college applications, personal statement writing, CSU and UC applications, Common Application, scholarships and financial aid (FAFSA and CA Dream Act).. College Bound will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday from 3pm-4:30pm, Computer Lab 234.  

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS
California State University (CSU) Application is open.  Deadline- October 1st November 30th.  

University of California (UC) Application will open November 1.  Deadline November 1-November 30th.

MMHS FINANCIAL AID NIGHT Thursday, November 10th @ 6:00PM Counseling Department will have our first Financial Aid night Thursday, November 10th at 6pm in English and Spanish.  This will be the first in a series of financial aid nights. Please encourage your seniors to attend.  English Presentation (Library) Spanish Presentation in (780/782).

College Advising:
Please encourage your 9th and 10th graders to sign up in the Counseling Center to meet with our new Cal-SOAP representative Chelsea.  She is looking to work with 9th and 10th graders to do some A-G college advising.  Sign ups are in the Counseling office.  

Senior Portrait Make Up: Please call Lifetouch at 858-935-6969  or 858-693-9197 to make an appointment if you have not had your portrait taken.

Principal's Update: 10/5/2016


SENIOR CHECK MEETINGS- School Counselors are beginning senior check meetings and this will occur through the end of October to beginning of November.. We will be meeting with seniors one-on-one to review their graduation status and their post-secondary plans.  We have many critical deadlines and a wealth of resources (college application deadlines,SAT/ACT, financial aid, scholarships, community college, military information, careers, college/career resources, college fairs, upcoming events, and college bound support, just to name a few) to share with them and it is imperative that we meet with them to cover all of this information.  

Senior Pictures:
Senior portrait packets have been handed out to ALL seniors. In the packets are the times scheduled for your student to have their picture taken at Mt. Miquel. The pictures are scheduled from Oct. 10th through the 21st of Oct. The times start at 1:00 to 7:00. Inside the packets will also be the most commonly asked questions along with suggestions for things to bring for the photo session. The pictures will also be the ones the yearbook will use this year. The senior portraits are also a fundraiser for Mt. Miguel. For each packet ordered we will receive a portion back to the school.

GUHSD GOT PLANS College Fair- Saturday October 8th 9am-1pm @ Cuyamaca College- A bus will be provided and permission slips will be available in the Counseling Center with Mrs. Tayac, Counselor.

ASSETs Highlighted Programs

Student Athlete Academic Support Services (S.A.A.S.S)
 The dual role of student and athlete can be a daunting challenge for any student involved in athletics. Recognizing that academic challenge, the Student Athlete Academic Support Services (S.A.A.S.S.) program has been developed at Mount Miguel to assist all student-athletes and students in achieving academic excellence. Sessions are offered Monday 12:30-1:30 pm, Tuesday & Thursday 3-4 pm, and Wednesday 1-4 pm
